My Teaching Approach in the SEA Teacher Program

Curriculum

Tapaz Central Elementary School (TCES) implements the Philippine National K-12 Curriculum developed by the Department of Education (DepEd) of the Philippines. This curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education, focusing on mastering fundamental concepts, developing critical thinking skills, and fostering character formation.

At TCES, the curriculum is delivered through:

  • Thematic and Activity-Based Learning: Especially for elementary students, ensuring they grasp concepts in a more practical and applicable way.

  • Character Integration: Every subject incorporates values such as discipline, cooperation, and responsibility.

  • Student-Centered Learning Approach: Encouraging students to actively engage in discussions, experiments, and simple projects.

In addition to regular classes, TCES also offers a Special Science Elementary School (SSES) program for students with a strong interest and aptitude in science and mathematics. The Grade 2 SSES class, where I taught, follows a more in-depth and hands-on learning approach compared to regular classes.

Teaching Plan Related to My Major

As a Mathematics Education major, I taught Mathematics to Grade 2 SSES, focusing on the topic "Measuring Time." The teaching plan at TCES follows a structured, step-by-step approach to ensure students understand the concepts effectively.

Every teacher at TCES follows a Lesson Plan that aligns with the DepEd curriculum standards. The lesson plan I used was a Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP), which even included scripted teacher-student interactions to guide classroom discussions smoothly.

My Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP) consists of five key components:

  1. Objective: Defining the learning goals.

  2. Subject Matter: Outlining the topic and key concepts.

  3. Procedure: Step-by-step teaching process, including activities and instructional strategies.

  4. Evaluation: Methods to assess students' understanding of the lesson.

  5. Assignment: Follow-up tasks to reinforce learning.

With a well-structured and activity-based teaching plan, TCES ensures that students grasp mathematical concepts effectively and can apply them in their daily lives.
