From Curriculum to Classroom
Curriculum
Tapaz Central Elementary School (TCES) follows the Philippine National K-12 Curriculum developed by the Department of Education (DepEd). This curriculum extends the duration of basic education from 10 years to 12 years, structured as follows:
Elementary Education: Grades 1 to 6.
Junior High School: Grades 7 to 10.
Senior High School: Grades 11 and 12.
The goal of this curriculum is to provide a well-rounded education, ensuring that students not only gain academic knowledge but also acquire practical skills applicable to daily life and future careers.
Teaching Plan (Mathematics: Measuring Time)
As a Mathematics Education major, I taught the topic "Measuring Time" in Grade 2 SSES at TCES. To ensure an engaging and effective learning experience, I designed an interactive lesson plan consisting of three main stages:
1. Introduction
Started with a short story about the importance of time in daily life.
Asked students questions such as, "What kind of clock is used in this story?"
Displayed a large analog clock in front of the class and discussed its function.
Explained why knowing how to tell time is essential.
2. Lesson Proper
Introduced the concept of time (hours, minutes, AM, and PM) using a PowerPoint presentation created with Canva and displayed on the LED TV.
Used a styrofoam analog clock to demonstrate how clock hands move.
Conducted a hands-on activity where students matched analog and digital times using "time cards."
Provided simple problem-solving exercises and encouraged students to answer in groups.
3. Conclusion
Held a Q&A session to reinforce student understanding.
Distributed worksheets containing exercises for assessment.
Concluded with a short reflection on the importance of understanding time.
Through this approach, I aimed to ensure that Grade 2 SSES students at TCES not only understood the theory of time measurement but could also apply it in their daily lives.
