What I Learned from Teaching Abroad: My SEA Teacher Experience
Outcomes of Practicum
This program allowed me to achieve several milestones:
Enhanced teaching skills: I learned to use various interactive teaching strategies, including visual aids and educational games.
Adaptation to a foreign education system: I gained a better understanding of how the Philippine curriculum is implemented and how its teaching approaches differ from those in Indonesia.
Improved communication skills: Engaging with students and teachers in English helped me become more confident in speaking and teaching in a foreign language.
Experience in a multicultural environment: I adapted to the school culture in the Philippines and interacted with students and teachers from diverse backgrounds.
Challenges of Practicum
During the program, I encountered several challenges:
Language Barrier: Some students were more accustomed to speaking their local language, making it difficult to communicate effectively. Solution: I used visual aids, gestures, and body language to help students understand the lesson.
Differences in Teaching Methods: Grade 2 SSES students were used to learning through songs and storytelling, whereas I initially focused on a concept-based and exercise-driven approach. Solution: I integrated songs and educational games into my lessons to increase student engagement.
Classroom Management: The students were very active and enthusiastic, requiring effective strategies to maintain order in the classroom. Solution: I established clear classroom rules before the lesson started, used a positive and friendly approach, and rewarded students who demonstrated good discipline.
Overall Impression
The SEA Teacher Batch 10 program was a truly valuable experience for me as a student of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. It gave me the opportunity to understand a different education system, enhance my teaching skills, and learn how to adapt to a new environment. Additionally, my interactions with students and teachers at Tapaz Central Elementary School helped me appreciate the importance of effective communication in teaching.
Despite facing challenges, this experience enriched my perspective on teaching, strengthened my soft skills, and shaped me into a better educator. With determination and perseverance, this program not only improved my professional abilities as a future teacher but also expanded my global outlook on education.
